![]() The Modern movement in architecture, which developed in Europe and America in the early decades of the twentieth century, had a fascination with. mathematicians attitudes to tessellations. ![]() © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2018. The architectural examples range from simple Neolithic weaving and stone cutting practices to late twentieth century aperiodic cladding systems in major. In architecture, such techniques are typically employed to create a more durable or weatherproof finish for a floor, wall, or ceiling. These three processes result in the production of a geometric pattern of connected shapes which cover a plane. ![]() Therefore, research on the application of tessellation in architectural geometry design is of great necessity in architecture studies. Abstract This chapter is focused on the tessellation, tiling, and weaving of architectural surfaces. The development of Computer technology enables tessellation to be more powerful, as seen in surface control, surface display and structure design, etc. In history, tessellation was applied into skins or decorations in architecture. Both Geometry and Crystallography, the latter of which is the basic theory of three-dimensional tessellations, need to be studied. Besides, some special types of tessellations such as Voronoi Tessellation and Delaunay Triangles are also included. In terms of dimensions, there are two- dimensional tessellations and three-dimensional tessellations in terms of symmetry, there are periodic tessellations and aperiodic tessellations. Tessellation has been found since the birth of civilization. Examples of aperiodic tessellations include Pinwheel tilings and Penrose tilings. The Sumerian culture was first recorded as using clay for tessellation décor in homes and venerative buildings. The finest examples of tessellation patterns in architecture and art can be found in Islam. * Corresponding author: Email: plays a significant role in architectural geometry design, which is widely used both through history of architecture and in modern architectural design with the help of computer technology. Tessellations or tiling were first used as part of wall and architectural décor dating as far back as 4,000 BCE. A prime example of Islamic religious art would be the building and ornamentation of a mosque, which is a Muslim place of worshiplike a church is for Christians, or a synagogue is for Jews.
